What is diadumene lineata?

Diadumene lineata or the lined sea anemone is a species of sea anemone belonging to the family Diadumenidae. It is found in the coastal waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean, from Canada to Mexico, and is commonly spotted in tide pools and shallow rocky areas, attached to rocks or other hard surfaces.

The lined sea anemone ranges in color from pale green to brown, with distinctive white or tan stripes that run lengthwise along its tentacles. It typically grows up to 10 cm in diameter, with short tentacles that are used for both feeding and defense.

Like other sea anemones, Diadumene lineata is a predator, feeding on small fish and crustaceans that it catches with its tentacles. It is also able to reproduce both sexually and asexually, either by releasing eggs and sperm into the water or by dividing in half and regenerating new individuals.

While not considered to be an endangered species, Diadumene lineata is sometimes collected for use in the aquarium trade, which can potentially impact wild populations. It is also threatened by habitat destruction and pollution in its coastal habitat.
